Bathing Your Pets: Truth vs. Fiction

There is so much misinformation about bathing pets… Want the truth?  Here it is:  What matters most is what type of shampoo you’re using.

What matters most is what type of shampoo you’re using. With the majority of pet shampoos, you can bathe your pets as often as you wish.  Let me say that again! With the majority of pet shampoos, you can bathe your pets as often as you wish.

With our Aloe & Oatmeal Shampoo, for example, you can use it 2 or 3 times a week if you have the time and the desire to bathe your pet that often. And every time you bathe your pet with this shampoo, you will ADD moisturizers to the skin… not dry them out.  So forget the old wives’ tales and old beliefs, and feel free to bathe your pet as often as you wish.  Understand that the skin of dogs and cats has a different “pH” (level of acidity) from human skin, so human skin products can be damaging to a pet’s skin if used often. And to address a common myth that all vets get tired of hearing:  NO, there is NOTHING magical about Dawn.  It’s great for dirty

And to address a common myth that all vets get tired of hearing: NO, there is NOTHING magical about Dawn. It’s great for dirty dishes and may help “de-grease” waterfowl caught in oil slicks, but it’s definitely not a good idea for your pets. So, I urge you to stop using Dawn (and Baby shampoo, too !) Especially when there are far superior pet shampoos that will truly help enhance your pet’s skin and haircoat.  It doesn’t bother me if you use Dawn (or baby shampoo) once or twice if you have nothing else available, BUT you definitely should not use it on a regular basis!

If you are wondering what I recommend, just ask! We offer some great products, just visit our store HERE or ask when at one of our clinics.

Take care, Dr. Bob
